Window Won't Open or Close Properly

Windows fail to open or close for a few common reasons: paint sealing the sash, wood swelling from humidity, worn weatherstripping, or broken hardware. Most are straightforward DIY fixes.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. 1

    Check if it's painted shut

Run a utility knife or a paint zipper tool along the seam between the sash and the frame, all four sides. Apply firm upward pressure on the sash with your palms — don't use a crowbar on the glass.

  2. 2

    Check for swelling (wood windows)

Wood windows can swell in humid months and return to normal in dry weather. Try operating the window in the morning when it's cooler. If it works then but not later, the wood needs to be planed or sanded on the sticking edges, then repainted to seal.

  3. 3

    Lubricate the tracks

For double-hung windows, clean the side channels with a damp cloth, then rub a wax candle, bar soap, or silicone spray along the full track. Don't use WD-40 — it attracts dust and dries out.

  4. 4

    Fix a broken balance (double-hung)

If the window slides but won't stay up, the balance springs or tapes need replacing. These are window-specific — search your window brand and 'balance replacement' for the exact part.

  5. 5

Adjust or replace the operator (casement)

Casement windows use a crank operator. If the crank turns but the window doesn't move, the operator gear is worn. Replacement operators are available at hardware stores — match your brand and arm length.

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • Never force a window open with a pry bar near the glass — you risk cracking the pane.

When to Call a Pro

If the window frame itself is racked (out of square) due to foundation settling or structural movement, window operation won't improve until the underlying issue is addressed.
