Smoke Detector Keeps Beeping

A smoke detector that chirps every 30–60 seconds is almost always telling you the battery is low. A detector that sounds a full alarm with no smoke present may need cleaning or replacement. Either way, it's a quick fix.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. 1

    Replace the battery

Twist or pull the detector off the ceiling mount. Open the battery compartment and replace with a fresh 9V or AA battery (check your model). Press the test button after replacing — it should sound a brief alarm, then go quiet.

  2. 2

    Check for a hardwired unit

If your detector is hardwired (has wires coming out of the ceiling), it still has a backup battery — replace it the same way. Hardwired units also have a battery drawer on the side or bottom.

  3. 3

    Clean the detector

Dust and insects inside the sensing chamber can cause false alarms. Use a can of compressed air to blow through the vents around the perimeter. Don't use a vacuum — it can damage the sensor.

  4. 4

    Check the age

Smoke detectors expire. Check the manufacture date on the back — if it's over 10 years old, replace the entire unit regardless of battery condition. Sensors degrade over time and become unreliable.

  5. 5

    Replace the unit if needed

New smoke detectors are $15–$30 at any hardware store. Mount the new base to the existing bracket (most are compatible), connect the wires if hardwired, and snap the detector on. Test it with the test button.

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • Never remove a smoke detector or disable it because it's annoying — replace the battery or the unit instead.
  • Carbon monoxide detectors (often combined with smoke detectors) also need battery replacement and have a 5–7 year lifespan.

When to Call a Pro

If you have a hardwired interconnected system throughout the house and all detectors are alarming, check your breaker and consult an electrician if the system won't reset.
