Electrical Outlet Not Working

Dead outlets are usually caused by a tripped GFCI outlet somewhere on the same circuit, or a tripped breaker. Less commonly, a wire connection has come loose inside the outlet box. The first two are quick DIY fixes.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. 1

Find and reset the GFCI outlet

GFCI outlets (the ones with TEST/RESET buttons, common in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoors) protect multiple outlets on the same circuit. One tripped GFCI can take out several other outlets. Find every GFCI outlet in your home and press RESET on each one.

  2. 2

    Check the breaker panel

Look for a breaker in the middle position (between ON and OFF) or one that's clearly different from the others. Push it fully to OFF, then back to ON.

  3. 3

    Test the outlet

Plug in a lamp or phone charger to verify. If still dead after resetting the GFCI and breaker, continue.

  4. 4

    Check for a switch-controlled outlet

Some rooms have a wall switch that controls a specific outlet (common in living rooms without ceiling lights). Try flipping every switch in the room.

  5. 5

    Inspect the outlet (advanced)

With the breaker OFF, remove the outlet cover plate and the two screws holding the outlet in the box. Gently pull it out and look for any wires that have come disconnected — they should all be secured under screws or in the push-in connectors. If you see a disconnected wire, reconnect it and push the outlet back in.

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • Always verify the breaker is OFF before touching any wires inside an outlet box — use a non-contact voltage tester to be certain.
  • If you see burn marks inside the box, melted wire insulation, or smell burning, call an electrician — don't reconnect anything.

When to Call a Pro

If the outlet is dead and you can't find a tripped GFCI or breaker, or if there's any sign of heat damage inside the box, call a licensed electrician.
