Garbage Disposal Not Working

Most disposal problems are one of three things: it needs a reset, it's jammed, or the switch/outlet has lost power. All are fixable in minutes without any plumbing knowledge.

Step-by-Step Fix

  1. 1

    Press the reset button

Look for a small red or black button on the bottom of the disposal unit under the sink. If it's popped out, press it firmly until you feel it click. Turn the disposal on — this alone fixes a large percentage of 'dead' disposals.

  2. 2

    Check the outlet and switch

Many disposals are plugged into an outlet under the sink — check that it's plugged in and the outlet has power (use a phone charger to test). Also check your breaker panel for a tripped breaker.

  3. 3

    Unjam the disposal

If you hear a humming sound but no spinning, it's jammed. TURN IT OFF FIRST. Most disposals come with a hex wrench — insert it into the port on the bottom center of the unit and turn back and forth to free the jam. If you don't have the wrench, a ¼-inch hex key works.

  4. 4

    Clear the jam from above

After using the hex key, shine a flashlight into the disposal from above. NEVER put your hand in. Use tongs or needle-nose pliers to remove any visible debris — bones, utensils, and pit seeds are common culprits.

  5. 5

    Run water and test

Run cold water into the sink, then turn on the disposal. Let it run for 30 seconds after the grinding stops to clear debris through the drain.

⚠️ Safety Notes

  • Never put your hand into the disposal — even when it's off, the blades are sharp.
  • Always turn the disposal off and wait 10 seconds before using the hex key to unjam it.

When to Call a Pro

If the disposal is leaking from the bottom (not the drain connection), the internal seal is failed and the unit should be replaced. Leaks from the side connection where it meets the drain pipe can usually be fixed by tightening the slip nut.
